ADAM CUSTINS can do no wrong. Seriously, try to pick a fault in this portrait of GRACE. We sure cant!
Hi, my name is Adam…and I’m an instant photographer…..
Last week, on Thursday evening, I joined a small group of instant film photographers, and The Impossible Project team to discuss shooting technique, critique recent work, and talk all things instant. Unlike AA, they gave us red wine and flat pretzels. (rethink the pretzel indeed)
Particularly we talked about the latest COOL film stock released late April. I showed some images I’d shot with it the day before on the PX Color Shade stock. It is sharp, warm toned, and has much reduced mottling. Mottling is the in-house term for the pattern that can develop in the blacks, that look a bit like round mould spots. Aesthetic, but something TIP is working to eliminate. Compared to last year’s film, they are succeeding amazingly.
During the evening, I learnt just how much of a challenge TIP has set itself. The precarious, and uncertain nature of analogue film manufacturing shouldn’t be underestimated. For example, in the old days, Polaroid manufactured all the chemistry in house, but because of the small volumes TIP uses, they have to out-source component chemicals. The low volumes mean that they cannot demand as stringent quality controls, hence the variability between film batches.
I have had discussions with photographers over the years, some preferring to wait until “they get it right, because the film is still in beta stage”….. and yes they could, but here for the first time in decades is the opportunity to become part of photography history, and make some unique images. The film will always evolve. Yes, one day it will satisfy many of the fundamental requirements to be called “ready”, such as near natural colors, instant opaqueness, etc but in the mean time photographers can join in and help one of photography’s most adventurous endeavours.
Living in New York, and having the store just down the road, has made shooting their film a great experience. Being able to restock, (as opposed to shipping film in, and waiting days when you’re in a hurry to shoot) is amazing.
There is a depth of knowledge that the team at the store have, and willingly share, and you can see how passionate they all are about the medium, and photography as a whole. They are all photographers in their own right: shooting personal work, and commercially. Their work shares the walls with the rotating artist shows in the gallery space.
Now the NY store is running a monthly Analogue Feedback Night, with the next on the 31st May, 6-9pm. I plan to be there. It’s a bit like a support group for instant photographers… good to know you’re not alone with this addiction.
We love PRINT magazine, NICOLE LEYBOURNE does a killer job on this sweet publication and this issue is particularly awesome as, not only is the cover by ADAM CUSTINS, but look at all the mentions our models and friends (not to mention ourselves) get in the masthead, plus a fantastic editorial of KITTY looking as stunning as ever… our admiration goes on.
